IT 412 Theory and Practice of Translation
IT 412 Theory and Practice of Translation
Credits: 3
Translation consists of much more than converting one language to another. This course explores the technical, artistic, ethical, and practical applications of translation between Italian and American cultures. Students will develop greater linguistic sensitivity through the practice of translation in various contexts (using youth slang, sarcasm, puns, obscenities, legalese, and much more). Students will experiment with mechanical translation (particularly computer programs using generative Artificial Intelligence) and will become better judges of translation quality. This class also introduces students to intersemiotic translation, that is, how to interpret the signs, symbols, and body language of Italian culture. The study of translation ultimately leads to a richer understanding of the purpose and power of effective communication in one’s native language as well.
