Biography
Sherry Roush (Ph.D. Yale University, M.A. Yale University, B.A. University of CA, Santa Cruz) is Liberal Arts Professor of Italian specializing in medieval/renaissance, and early modern Italian literature, culture, and translation. Most recently, she translated and edited Phileto’s Story by Lodovico Corfino (Centre for Renaissance and Reformation Studies “Texts in Translation,” 2024). She is also the translator and editor of Jacopo Caviceo’s Peregrino (University of Toronto Press, 2023), which was awarded a 2020 National Endowment for the Arts grant in Literary Translation and a 2020 National Endowment for the Humanities Faculty Research fellowship. She is the author of Speaking Spirits: Ventriloquizing the Dead in Renaissance Italy (University of Toronto Press, 2015) and Hermes’ Lyre: Italian Poetic Self-Commentary from Dante to Tommaso Campanella (University of Toronto Press, 2002), the editor and translator of the Selected Philosophical Poems of Tommaso Campanella in two volumes (The University of Chicago Press and Fabrizio Serra Editore, both 2011), and the co-editor with Cristelle Baskins of The Medieval Marriage Scene: Prudence, Passion, Policy (Arizona State University Press, 2005).
Her scholarly articles have appeared in journals including Renaissance Quarterly, Italica, MLN: Modern Language Notes, Quaderni d’Italianistica, Italian Quarterly, Viator, Italian Culture, and the Rivista della Letteratura Italiana Tardogotica e Quattrocentesca. She serves or has served on editorial/advisory boards of journals including Glossator: Practice and Theory of Commentary, Dante Studies, Rivista di Letteratura Storiografica Italiana, Rivista della Letteratura Italiana Antica, and Beyond: Journal of International Education.
Sherry Roush is a proud Middlebury Bread Loafer and has received grants and awards for her research, including prizes from the Bogliasco Foundation, the Folger Institute, and the Beinecke Rare Books and Manuscripts Library. She has received two awards for outstanding teaching and serves as the Assistant Marshal-in-Charge of Commencement ceremonies for Penn State University. She was an elected member of the Modern Language Association’s Executive Committee for Translation Studies and for the Division of Medieval and Renaissance Italian Literature. She has served on the MLA committee to select the Lois Roth and Aldo and Jeanne Scaglione Prizes for the Translation of a Literary Work, the American Literary Translators Association committee to select the Italian Prose in Translation Award, and the American Association of Teachers of Italian committee to select book prizes in various categories of scholarship.
