Biography:

Javier López Seoane finished his B.A. in English Language and Literature at the Universidade da Coruña, Spain, in 2016. Originally born in the city of Ferrol—in Galicia, Spain—he has lived in many different cities all over the country: Ferrol, Ávila, Barcelona, Denia, A Coruña, Melilla and Ceuta. He is very passionate about the history of Spain, its cultures, and its different languages. For that reason, his primary interests in the field of linguistics include language change, languages in contact, bilingualism, language revitalization, and Second Language Acquisition.

His research focuses on exploring recent changes experienced by the regional romance languages of Spain due to the rise of Spanish as the wider language of communication in the country. Recent attempts to prevent the progressive decay of those regional languages (i.e. Galician and Catalan) aimed at preserving the languages as traditionally spoken. However, the effectiveness of these language revitalization efforts initiated in the 1980s, which included formal education in the endangered languages as well as the creation of official standards for traditionally orally transmitted languages, are yet to be tested. Javier is working in ways to measure the effects of those revitalization efforts and to what extent processes of language change can be artificially stopped or reverted.
