Emily is a first-year graduate student in Penn State’s Department of Spanish, Italian, and Portuguese pursuing a Ph.D. in Latin American Literature. She holds a BA in English and Spanish from Washington & Jefferson College. Following her graduation, Emily served as a Fulbright English Teaching Assistant at Universidad Nacional de Colombia in Bogotá, Colombia.  There, Emily taught several beginner and advanced level English courses and facilitated a book club for English language learners.

Emily’s primary research interests include: contemporary Caribbean literature and poetry, women’s studies, queer theory, and post-colonialism. As an undergraduate, Emily’s work focused primarily on contemporary Cuban and Cuban-American literature and “performances” of gender and cubanidad. Part of her honors project on this topic was presented at the 2016 Reading Cuba Literature Conference at Florida International University in Miami.

Emily is the first-year representative for SIPGSO. She is a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Sigma Delta Pi.
