All students wishing to complete a Spanish Minor must take a minimum of 18 credit hours of Spanish at the Spanish 100 level and higher.


Required Credits (9 Credits):

  • SPAN 100 
  • SPAN 200*
  • SPAN 215 (Intro. to Spanish Linguistics) or 253W (Intro. to Hispanic Literature)

Take three courses (9 CR.) from the list below:

At least TWO (6 cr.) must be at the 400 level

  • SPAN 315 - Spanish and Spanish speakers in the US
  • SPAN 314 - Spanish Sounds
  • SPAN 316 - Spanish Morphology and Syntax
  • SPAN 353 - Survey of Spanish Literature Before 1700
  • SPAN 354 - Survey of Spanish Literature Since 1700
  • SPAN 355 - Survey of Spanish American Literature through “Modernismo”
  • SPAN 356 - Survey of Spanish American Literature after “Modernismo”
  • SPAN 397 - Special Topics (Linguistics, Literature or Culture)
  • SPAN 410 - Advanced Conversation 
  • SPAN 412 - Translation
  • SPAN 418 - Evolution of Spanish
  • SPAN 420 - Spanish for Business & International Trade 
  • SPAN 439 - Don Quijote
  • SPAN 440 - Teaching Romance Languages 
  • SPAN 472 - Contemporary Spanish American Novel 
  • SPAN 476 - Masterpieces of Spanish American Lit.
  • SPAN 490 - Masterpieces of Spanish Prose 
  • SPAN 491 - Masterpieces of Spanish Drama and Poetry
  • SPAN 497 - Special Topics (Linguistics, Literature or Culture)

SPAN 199, 299, 399 and 499 (Study Abroad Spanish) and SPAN 197, 297,397 and 497 (Special Topics Courses, if taught in Spanish) may also be applied to the Spanish minor and be will substituted for the appropriate course by the Spanish minor advisor.  All courses taken abroad must be taught in Spanish and be focused on Spain or Latin America.

NOTE: Spanish 130, 131, 230, 231 and any course that does not require knowledge of Spanish DO NOT count toward the Spanish minor.          

*Students who took SPAN 110 prior to Fall 2013 may substitute 110 in place of SPAN 200.  The student’s audit will be corrected automatically by the Spanish Department before the student graduates. The SPAN Minor may be declared through eLion once a student has 5th semester standing and officially in a major.
