Italian Major Options

Italian Studies Option

Required Courses:

Select 27 credits from categories A, B, and C. NOTE: Courses in different categories in the Italian Studies option cannot double-count. Example: if a student uses IT 422 to satisfy category A requirements, IT 422 cannot count in category B. Also, in addition to the prescribed IT 415/490 course, Italian studies majors must take a minimum of 12 credits at the 400-level in categories A, B, and C.

 

Category A. Select 6 credits from: IT 320 (3), IT 325 (3), IT 330W (3), IT 412 (3), IT 422 (3), IT 450 (3), IT 460 (3), or other 300- or 400-level course taught in Italian in consultation with major advisor.

 

Category B. Select 12 credits from: IT 110 (3), IT 230 (3), IT 320 (3), IT 325 (3), IT 330W (3), IT 399 (3), IT 422 (3), IT 475 (3), IT 480 (3), IT 485 (3), IT 497 (3), or other courses in consultation with major advisor.

 

Category C. Select 9 credits of 400-level courses in related disciplines from: ART H 411 (3-9), ART H 414 (3), ART H 423 (3-9), ART H 456 (3), ART H 458 (3), CAMS 410 (3), CAS 471 (US, IL, 3), CMLIT 400Y (3), CMLIT 401Y (3), CMLIT 402Y (3), LATIN 400 (3), LATIN 402 (3-12), LATIN 404 (3-12), LATIN 420 (3-6), LATIN 450W (3), LING 447 (3), LING 448 (3), PHIL 437 (3), PHIL 454 (3), PHIL 455 (3-6), PHIL 464 (3-6), PHIL 465 (3-6), PL SC 431 (3), PL SC 432 (3) or other courses in consultation with major advisor.

Select 15 credits (at least 6 of which must be at the 400-level) from: IT 130 (GH, IL, 3), IT 131 (GH, US, 3), IT 230 (GH, 3), IT 325 (3), IT 330W (3), IT 415 (3), IT 422 (3), IT 450 (3), IT 460 (3), IT 475 (3), IT 480 (3), IT 490 (3), IT 497 (1-9), or other course in consultation with major advisor.

 

Select 33 credits from: CAS 200 (US, IL, 3), CAS 203 (3) ECON 002 (3), ECON 004 (GS, 3), ENGL 202C (GWS, 3) or ENGL 202D (GWS, 3), HD FS 287W (GS, US, 3), LING 100 (3), PL SC 014 (GS, 3) or PL SC 020 (GS, 3), PSYCH 100 (GS, 3), S T S 100 (GH, 3), ECON 333 (GS, 3).

 

Select 9 credits from A or B:

 

Category A. Complete 9 credits as participants in a Penn State or Penn State-approved education abroad program of a minimum of six weeks in length. At least 3 of these 9 credits must be taught in Italian language, such as IT 001 (4), IT 002 (4), IT 099 (IL, 1-12), IT 399 (IL, 1-12), IT 496 (1-18), or other course abroad in consultation with a major advisor.

 

Category B. Select 9 credits of 400-level courses in related disciplines from: AMSTD 448 (3), ART H 411 (3-9), ART H 414 (3), ART H 423 (3-9), ART H 456 (3), ART H 458 (3), CAMS 410 (3), CAS 471 (US, IL, 3), ENGL 416 (3), ENGL 417 (3), ENGL 418 (3), ENGL 419 (3), LATIN 420 (3-6), LATIN 450W (3), LING 447 (3), LING 448 (3), PHIL 454 (3-6), PHIL 455 (3-6), PHIL 464 (3-6), PHIL 465 (3-6), PL SC 431 (3), PL SC 432 (3), PSYCH 457 (3) or other courses in consultation with major advisor.

Language and Literature Option                                    

Required Courses:

Select 18 credits of which at least 9 credits are courses taught in Italian, and at least 9 credits are at the 400-level (some courses will satisfy both conditions).


For courses taught in Italian, select from: IT 320 (3), IT 325 (3), IT 330W (3), IT 412 (3), IT 422 (3), IT 450 (3), IT 460 (3), or other courses taught in Italian in consultation with major advisor.

For courses at the 400-level, select from: IT 412 (3), IT 422 (3), IT 450 (3), IT 460 (3), IT 475 (3), IT 480 (3), IT 485 (3), IT 497 (3), or other 400-level Italian courses in consultation with major advisor.

Eight credits from one of the following 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5:

 

LATIN 001 (4) and LATIN 002 (4)
FR 001 (4) and FR 002 (4)
SPAN 001 (4) and SPAN 002 (4)
PORT 001 (4) and PORT 002 (4)

 

Foreign Study: IT 001 (4), IT 002 (4), IT 099 (1-12), IT 399 (1-12) or other courses abroad in consultation with major advisor.

Major requirement: 35 credits
